The Rivian R1T is an Incredibly Fun Electric Pickup!

Rivian R1T is a quad motor adventurous electric compact pickup truck. I've run out of adjectives. But this truck is incredibly fun.

    • @Thomas Comerford 1) R1T looks way better than ugly Cybertruck. 2) Mercedes EQS and Nio ET7 have better range than the Plaid 3) Tesla uses Panasonic batteries and Tesla is stuck on level 2 autonomous for years while Mercedes and Nio have level 3, Peugeot in their concept cars even level 4 autonomous driving. 4) The new Rimac Bugatti company is the real innovation company 5) The more reliable brands Japanese, Chinese and Koreans are already at same range than Tesla on their average cars and in a few years will surpass them. 6) Czinger makes 3D printed cars while Tesla is stuck on giga press. Also Mercedes new EQS factory is the most modern car factory of 2021. 7) Besides the Tesla Roadster all Tesla are ugly cars and do not turn heads (besides Tesla fanboys).

    • @LeftOverPorkChop yeah you'd have to have extra steel or a composite (or aluminum) and some high amperage connectors. As well as make the car body Ridgid without the battery

      Thomas RThomas R26 أيام قبل
    • @Thomas R The battery swap could work, but it's a huge weight consideration. We'll see how far the technology can get them.

      LeftOverPorkChopLeftOverPorkChop26 أيام قبل
    • @LeftOverPorkChop the power density isnt quite there yet but it will be interesting to see what kind of unique rescue options will be out there. maybe a truck with a supercharging and a genie XD. But i'm hoping battery swapping makes it to market. maybe you could replace just a portion of the battery bank

      Thomas RThomas R27 أيام قبل
    • Of course, you can't bring a can of electricity with you when your batteries die and you're 30 miles from a gas station. The Jeep 4xE only goes about 3 miles off road electric only.

    • @James Hudson SUV/Trucks are not unnecessary in most parts of Europe - but they are either prohibited in major big cities due to size and emission...especially size - older European cities are trying to go zero cars by 2030 or at least cutting down. There is no space like in the USA. Our buildings came before the car, unlike in the USA. I can see the use of a truck outside the cities.

  • Great review. This truck is extremely well-designed but for the software improvements needed as you mentioned. They really made a good decision with the pass-through cargo and the powered frunk. Love the optional camping setup too. Rivian still needs to solve mass production but so far so good! I think the pass-through cargo could be used for guns as mentioned in the comments....but also shopping, maybe skis or a snowboard, ski/snowboard gear (if the boards/skis don't fit). It's such a cool space. I love that one can stand on the fold-out doors. Also, the charger being in the front is a nice touch.

And really good ground clearance. My two criticisms are: no physical buttons for simple things like heater, stereo; and some of the interior plastic is just too cheap.

I think RJ has shown us that quality is important and what people want after spending 70k upwards. • Waiting on the R1S SUV. What I love about Rivian is that it has interesting gimmicks like Tesla does but in areas where it makes sense. The different key fobs with one being an activity bracelet similar to Land Rovers, the many cargo compartments including the gear tunnel which also doubles as a bench, it has its own version of sentry mode which is one of the only Tesla gimmicks I actually care for, a rechargeable portable speaker, a rechargeable portable flashlight, a built in air compressor, many household charge ports in the frunk and cargo bed, and the security cable for having a bicycle in the rear. No useless garbage like a steering yoke that is in there because the narcissist CEO feels like having it there even if many of his customers hate it, or a completely useless smart summons where the car moves like a confused snail, takes forever for the car to get to you at which point I'd rather just get the stupid car myself. The interior looks nicer and way better put together than that of Teslas, and most of all, the car looks like it has character of which I find Teslas are completely devoid of.

    Ahren WagnerAhren Wagnerأشهر قبل
    • Yea, but then there would be less incentive to sell the more expensive version. Something that's simultaneously built smart, efficient, modular, durable, affordable, and easily repairable, doesn't make the big bucks in the long run, constantly reminding us of the true purpose of these companies was never actually to provide you with any particular transport experience, as much as it was to provide them with money. Hence, why that vehicle you've described will never exist, ouside of perhaps some future, probably croudfunded, open vehicle manufacturing hub. That will probably exist, at some time... don't hold your breath tho. 🤔 Hmm ...pity I'm not the entrepreneur type to start that off... Imagine buying your exact parts that you could put together like lego. Build EXACTLY the vehicle you require. One could still make millions WHILE providing the world with clean, 3D printed modular car kit parts at dramatically affordable vehicles by comparison. Thats where your car'd come from.

  • Good information. Thanks for sharing your insight and thoughts. I remember learning from an engineer at Ford that sometimes when an automotive company buys another automotive company, (i.e. when Ford owned Volvo) it is actually to acquire or have rights to some patent or technology. I am wondering if Ford might have all of the value it needs now and it can safely produce their own electric cars with the acquired tech without patent issues or concerns. Any thoughts on this premise?

  • How well do the screens cope with sunlight streaming in from the side windows? Are they bright enough to compete and remain usable? The infotainment screen in my van goes completely blank for all intents and purposes in bright sunlight, making the radio and map unusable, but at least I have a few electromechanical gauges so it doesn't affect operation of the vehicle. I'm sure Rivian and Tesla are rocking much better screens than my little Ram van, if course, but it's something I've wondered about as I've seen so many new vehicles move all the gauges onto screens.

If you speak with the producers of The Rivian cars you can tell this to sell more: To create a SUV with ample space to sleep / live in, and then you should be able to have 220 cm to stretch out on when taking a nap. The space of this SUV should be big enough to also to serve as an ambulance to add on the range of options for their SUVs. Know that the first cars and buses were electrical, and I found photos of electrical buses in London taken in 1906! One of them was running, the other charging up. Yes, so much interesting history has been suppressed from us!

While Europe has standardized, and big govt types want the US to do the same, we'll hopefully have a brutal war between charging networks. For the first many years, this will be a hassle. But the end result will be the cream rising to the top and the best system emerging, as chosen by actual users.

  • There's just something about listening to an urbanite tech guy reviewing a pick up truck. Sure, it has lots of interesting little features and can hold two back packs under the hood. But can it tow? How much can it haul? What is the range if you have a 5000 lb load on a trailer? (that would be a small towing load that a mid size truck would typically be expected to pull). To me, this is the epitome of why electric vehicles will not work. Sure, it will get the average guy back and forth to the office, and maybe to a camp site. But when it comes to being a truck, it isn't.

    • I'm a huge EV supporter and a first-day Tesla Model 3 reservation holder, but EV prices are heading the wrong way. I've never spent more than $28,000 on a car, all I want is a nice hatchback or small crossover with 200 miles range. So the Kia Soul EV or an updated Nissan Leaf without the dying CHAdeMO plug would be fine. But the 2020 Soul EV never made it to the USA and Nissan is replacing the Leaf with the $40,000+ 2022 Ariya. Instead everyone wants to sell $50,000+ electric SUVs and now trucks; the trailing automakers have the tax credit to make it slightly more affordable if you pay enough taxes. I'm glad most car makers are selling all the EVs they can make, I don't fault Tesla for raising prices, and at those prices established car makers should make money and continue EV investments. But it makes EVs less affordable, and leaves a huge hole in the market for Chinese manufacturers.

  • 10:50 The guys from Motor Trend took two of these across the country in a 5-part video you can find on youtube. In one of the episodes they had mentioned that because of how quiet it is, when they were blazing unpaved trails, there was just so much nature they were immersed in. Animals wouldn't scurry away, deer would just walk along with you, unlike a combustion engine that would make noise and get the animals to run away. Basically its a great way for those that like to get out in nature, open the windows and just be closer to that nature than ever.

Of course it happens with ices... we are talking about percentages here, and common sense.

  • Honestly the design is soooo much better than I could have imagined. I love the idea of futuristic and old school - cyberpunk if you will. But this outdoes cyberpunk. Because I don't want an eccentric vehicle that puts me in a certain category. I just want toned-down efficiency that blends in, but looks good. Its a head turner now, but its also a exactly what I want in a few years. Everything about this is great! I have a dream of owning a survival/adventure style vehicle sometime in the future, and this is ticking off every single box. Even stuff I didn't think about. In 10 years when I'm old enough and actually make money, I will get something similar to this.

  • Hey Marques, Is this a truck that drives like a car? I wonder if they at Rivian really knew what they wanted to design initially. It is true $70 K today (at the speed we print money today ) is like $35 K a few short years ago. probably even now the guy who buys a truck does it because he needs it not because he fell in love with the Rivian. I think it is a very expensive piece of moving property thinking that in the same the guy/person needs to buy food, rent an apartment, some clothes and has some other financial needs. Aside for the ego-stroked people who buy a big car not exactly for its utility but just for augmenting his or her prestige, who do you think would buy this truck at the minimum $70K plus taxes and interest?

  • The problem of Rivian may be its battery efficiency, 135kWHr for only 300 miles. Taking into account the idle battery loss in EVs, cost of charging is not too far from the cost of gasoline in ICE trucks of similar size.

Also Mercedes new EQS factory is the most modern car factory of 2021. 7) Besides the Tesla Roadster all Tesla are ugly cars and do not turn heads (besides Tesla fanboys).
