    • Hm, I do like uninterrupted screen space too BUT Sony significantly sacrified the selfie camera quality. Actually it is the worst I've ever seen on any over $800 smartphone. So in this case I'd perfer to have a punch hole in the left corner like OnePlus 9 Pro has, for instance.

  • @Marques Brownlee Please consider the fact, that the first visible lenses in mobile phones are "normal" aspheric lenses, but the last two - three lenses stretch the light to the corners of the bigger sensor. In fact, you're using almost the entire surface of a sensor. Why I do know it: Just disassemble some main cameras of new phones and you discover really strange lenses :) I suppose, that this Sony phone is indeed using the "full" area of the 1" sensor.

    modelllichtsystememodelllichtsystemeأشهر قبل
    • no it doesn't... The fact that the phone takes 12mp shots despite having a 20mp sensor indicates it's cropping the sensor, similar to the Panasonic lx7 from years ago

Even if they had slightly less detail or dynamic range, they were more pleasing to the eye especially with their colours, focus, etc. Perhaps it is a difference caused by my smartphone's display or I just actually prefer the Xperia's image it's quite surprising.

    • I almost feel Sony is secretly mimicking canon on this camera. Since canon doesn’t have a Camera on a phone

      Euge ZEuge Zأشهر قبل
    • It's less bright and flashy, but more true to life... Maybe with some post processing or more careful adjustment of the controls, the Sony could produce as good or better results than the iPhone, but the iPhone, Samsung, and Pixel have that computational/AI advantage where it's a much more "one-click for great results" solution, just one that gives you less control for the results you want, even if they are great. So Sony is definitely targeting a niche here, but a niche that clearly exists. And as far as Sony phones go, I've gotta say this is the coolest one I've ever seen from them, so they're going in the right direction.

    • To be honest I like that the photos come out true-to-life so I could actually do some editing instead of having the phone make the decision for me. I would rather create my own bokeh then have something processed to look like it. This isn't going to be your point and shoot phone, but with the work you can get better results.

      D NobleD Noble2 أشهر قبل
  • Thanks for bringing this up, the whole computational photography thing is really the central point here. I do a lot of mirrorless photography so sometimes people ask me what phone they should get for the best photo quality. I usually tell them that we're now in the post-hardware-specs era where it doesn't really matter that much what the sensor is actually outputting, it only matters what the software then does with this image. If an image looks more appealing at first glance in a side-by-side comparison it's not because the sensor has some crazy stats that make the image look better, it's usually just because the processing adapts the colours and details to look more like whatever patterns some neural network has extracted from a huge dataset of aesthetically pleasing professionally edited images.

    Pascal SommerPascal Sommer2 أشهر قبل
    • @Pascal Sommer Completely agree with that. Would love that my phone have as great image quality as my mirrorless in some years, but physical limits won’t make it true unless ML get so good to the point of faking the image quality. I do wish there would be a Sony alpha camera mixed with a Pixel phone tho!

      Nuno FreireNuno Freireأشهر قبل
    • @Nuno Freire Yes, completely agree about that fake HDR look! We're nowhere near the point yet where I'd trade my Sony A7S II for a phone camera. Although as you point out, most people won't notice it that much under "normal" (i.e. whatever the algorithms have been optimized for) conditions. However I'd go even further and say that it's not just that non-photographers don't notice, it's rather that phones and cameras are competing in slightly different spaces. For someone creating photos that are to be viewed on a small screen, competing against over-saturated Instagram photos, while under time pressure to get content out immediately during some event, those iPhone/Samsung/Pixel phone cameras might just be the better tool for the job even for people heavily invested in all their proper camera gear.

      Pascal SommerPascal Sommerأشهر قبل
    • I understand what you are getting at, but it is not really true and it is very evident by the quality of the photos that Marques showed here from the Sony compared to the iPhone. Any decent camera, event a point and shoot like the Sony RX will have way better quality than any phone camera can produce. Mobile photography always has that fake HDR look to it, even during the day, never enough contrast since the dynamic range is faked. Of course some shots do benefit a lot from that computational photography so out of the camera and to people that don't really understand post processing it is way easier to get a better photo on an iPhone or similar, but there is still no competition between a dedicated camera and a phone. With this said, the best camera is the one you got with you, so most times that is your phone! :)

    • @Saint Dreamer Yes, Im in no way sayingthat Iphone is shit or anything, because it istn, but what makes sony stand out is that they are passionate and care more about their company repuation among its users than just profit. This is why they still make only high quality devices, sometimes at the cost of only catering to a minority of audiences.

      dreu daxdreu dax15 أيام قبل
    • @dreu dax yup you are right and they do focus on making quality products. I mean everytime they release phones there's always a big change vs Apple where there's barely a change some times but they still make shit loads of money. I've seen people who consistently upgrade to the next iPhone when it comes out and I always get confused what's the hype when there is less that 50% of a difference from the previous phone. Sony seems to care more about customers too...I've tried to see how much it would be to ship their phones to my country and its somehow cheaper than the free headsets they give for free when you buy the phone. Clearly they are aware of the shipping costs so they basically give you a different product that costs more than that fee as a way to say thank you. But that only how I view it. Honestly I love their genuine treatment towards customers. Not like Apple that even decided to remove the charger out the box just to make new customers buy a new changer 🤦🏾‍♂️🤡 they're milking all the money out of their customers but I guess their biggest concern is money anyways

      Saint DreamerSaint Dreamer16 أيام قبل
    • @Saint Dreamer Yea, thing is apple has more funds to try and test stuff. Also I have a felling that sony has always went for passion and quality, this is why you see them make the same niche products even when it doesnt sell. • The point you made about computational photography reminds me of something I've noticed about the Japanese brands when it comes to software -- they are so much more focused on the device hardware and design and capabilities than they are on software. This shows as well when you look at the camera industry, which, for consumers anyway, is basically 100% Japanese. Creating good user experience through the software and interfaces on the camera simple isn't of interest, but creating a good user experience with the dials, the grip, the styling, the aesthetics of the body, etc .. is something they care about. Culturally, within Japan, software engineering is not really viewed as an upper tier career endeavor... it's more like one more necessary segment of the labor force, and has quite the blue collar image to it. People value this romanticized image of craftsmanship and creating quality software doesn't fit that image : hence why software-driven features for photography aren't a thing for Sony smartphones. By contrast, Apple, Samsung, etc. are technology companies that do put an emphasis on software.

Fascinating that the Xperia Pro-i and Pixel 6 are taking opposite approaches; Xperia is beefing up Smart Phone hardware to reintroduce traditional camera tech (f-stops and Zeiss glass, no less!), while Pixel seems to have set the upper limit on hardware and is concentrating on software solutions, which has been the whole story in the digital camera game from the beginning! It will be interesting to see if Xperia CAN give us an f-stop with a deeper DoF, AND avoid the 'fall-off' at the edges, AND utilize the full 1:1 of that CMOS chip. Here's hoping! Thanks for your great work!

  • As a photographer, I preferred the Xperia photos over the iPhone photos throughout. It has more natural tones, and better dynamic range. Have to point out a mistake by MOBHD here, the advantages of the iphone were not the aperture or the “crop factor catch”, but merely image processing. Iphones just process photos much better (and in a way that is more aligned towards peoples’ taste). Most of the bokeh in iphone photos are fake, and I thought he would point out that obvious fact. Regardless, there’s almost no point in jamming all that hardware into a phone, because slim phones will never be able to facilitate true lens mechanisms for large sensors. So the xperia is just silly

  • I dream to have a Sony phone someday, but it is too expensive for me and hard to acquire in our region. Though I still hope one of these days, I'd have one! Regarding this review, in my opinion, the comparison of camera features must first be understood by the objective behind it. Who are the targeted consumers? If we force that it is made for ordinary folks like me, then of course, Sony will be out of the game. So it is indeed fair to make a sense who this phone is for in the same way that a 50,000 USD movie camera are for pros and not for me. The Xperia Pro is really intended for geeks who wants to have full access to every single control and options. It is for geeks who are not spoilt by auto-features doing it all for them. This phone is not intended for everybody and it is indeed difficult to understand why Sony chose this risky direction though I trust them that they know what they are doing, and it is working as they are getting noticed again in the game. It is understandable that reviewers will go with the features that is popular with the majority, there are also some few reviewers I have seen who reviews a phone by what they are intended to be by the company that makes them. Despite the fact that I'd go for a Samsung for my daily driver, I love how Sony pushes on towards a direction that some reviewers and other companies undermine at the beginning and yet follow suit months or years afterwards anyway. I support this Sony phone and I believe it is truly a phone that deserves the PRO in its name unlike others that has the PRO but are praised because they are ironically full-auto and great with their automatic algorithms.

For other brands of smartphone, they have too much brightness to that person you're taking is totally different when you see that person right there in front of you, while sony tells the truth, what you see is real in everything.

  • Outside of anything that would be a firmware update, it baffles me the "in a future version", meaning new hardware, why someone would spend $1 or $1 million on a product that doesn't deliver or there are alternatives that deliver at a cheaper price is the most interesting thing. And this narrative plays out every year. Yes, it's your money to spend how you see it. Yes, it's tech and there maybe physical limitations that make it not possible for a phone to do what a DSLR can. Or maybe it can be done but companies have shareholders and need to churn something out for the books.

  • I'm guessing Sony just had a surplus of those sensors specifically, they wanted to launch this phone that was designed for a smaller sensor, but due to the silicon shortage, they had to use this sensor in place of a smaller 12M pixel sensor... I suppose it could be that they wanted the "largest cmos sensor in a phone" press, and they don't intend on selling a lot of these units. I just can't fathom that they would willingly waste so much silicon, considering how expensive those sensors must have been.

    • @pudencem1 What does your name suggest? Possessor of an empty brain? Lol Listen, kid. Not all audiophiles are losing their sleep over headphone jacks disappearing from phones. It is Apple, who first removed the headphone jack. If headphone jacks in smartphones are so important to audiophiles, they would have wholly boycotted Apple. However, in many audiophile meet ups, I have seen highly experienced audiophiles rocking the latest iPhones without the 3.5mm port. I asked them regarding the same and they told me that they prefer to listen to their desktop setups primarily and on the go, they rely on DAPs. May be try to gain some real world experience, before commenting your crap on youtube. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ Lastly, I don't need your fk approval for what I own and what I don't. The software was probably the worst you could find in a phone and the customer service for phones was made by the already existing customer service for their others products, to save cost. No need to mention it was infuriating, talking to someone that absolutely don"t know shit about the product for whom the only answer was reboot the phone or piss off. I'm glad they didn't survived in this market.

  • I think you missed a key point with the large image sensor. These phones all have OIS, so having 'spare' image sensor available will actually improve image quality under the right conditions. When OIS is used on a normal size sensor you can get blurring at the corners of the image, when the OIS is at the extent of its capability. Whereas I assume with Sony's oversized sensor they should be able to avoid this.

This sensor actually only has a 15.8mm diagonal, so about 2/3“. There’s a great video on the matter by Philip Bloom

  • Thank you for that revelation ,i appreciate it keeping real , and being honest to us n not just selling out . For someone like me that would of have to sacrifice paying a bill or two on time lol, just to save for the phone and come to realize my pixel or s21 has better aperture or light gathering due to it not utilizing the entire sensor , would of been f****** shitty since I use them for astrophotography .

  • Thanks for your great images showing how much of the 1-inch sensor is really used for a photograph! Every picture tells a story. 😎

  • Sony should have gone with a body that's more reminiscent of Samsung's Galaxy Camera GC100 thus allowing for collapsible zoom feature and proper full sensor coverage, they could have reduced the number of camera sensors due to a variable physical zoom lenses, used that or any other best for the task sensor behind the glass and thus their cybershot experia "eye" child could have differentiated itself more whilst improving the camera department, and possibly reduced the overall cost - after all less sensors of average quality in use in place of a physical linear zoom could have given better outputs for less... Heck, if they had gone with a thicker body they could have also increased the battery to get extreme running times pros and camera fans would appreciate ;) Sure one could lose the protection from elements ratings but it could have improved uniqueness of the device nowadays...

  • As someone who uses dedicated cameras for work and hobby, I will not start heavily factoring in a phone’s camera quality until it can potentially replace my daily carry point-and-shoot (currently a Fujifilm X100F). It’s obviously nice to have a great phone camera, but until it can make me question whether I even need my point-and-shoot or not, it won’t be a deciding factor for me. So cool to see the advancements they are making though! 📷

  • If Sony had that f2.0 aperture then i guess this phone camera is good with back lightings like they do in film making. Eveything would look fantastic afte the editing. 😀

    • 64mm f/2.0 full-frame is equal to 37.5mm f/1.17 APS-C, aperture is relative to format.

  • Dear MKBHD,🌹 instead of the usual yearly contest to guess which camera gives "best looking photos", please consider making a "most realistic looking photos" contest, where you (and your team/other youtubers) come together at the same location and snap a photo from different cameras then decide which one looks more real (or closer to what the human eye sees) I think this is the real challenge camera makers should focus on. Many times we see a good scene that just looks sooo different on the phone, the colors aren't real and the focus is too wide. Which phone managed to make the photos as realistic (at least in colors) as possible? please consider making this video. thanks 🌹
