  • The tesla steering "wheel" looks good, but is dangerous as fuck. The classic round steering wheel is a better design because it enables you to grab the steering wheel from any angle. Its more accessible, especially when you need to quickly grab the wheel with both hands to do a last munite maneuver to avoid something.

  • My neighbor has one of these, and gave me a ride today. It’s absolutely INSANE. I think the interior is awesome, the yoke is so-so, but otherwise the tech is amazing. Not to mention it’s incredibly quick. I felt the blood shifting to the back of my body. You can pull a G on a public road. THAT is madness.

  • Another great review so thanks for posting! Consideration for a departure from a wheel has been discussed since drive-by-wire was introduced. I wish I could find the source, but there’s been talk of introducing a joystick similar to what you see in some newer aircraft. So yes, designers have ‘presumably‘ toyed with how to implement left and right-hand (dual stick) modes. The only drawback that I found in this omitted video assessment is the costs.

  • Fantastic review! I love the car. The yoke steering wheel will be a learning curve like the key card, door handles, and having a giant touch screen instead of dials and buttons. It might take more than a few days to get used to all of the new functions. But the horn really should be where the airbag is. But then again, with further FSD updates coming, the perceived issues may get resolved through automation.

  • Great video! Like you said, the Tesla fit & finish makes it a hard pass for me. I would have thought they would have concentrated on a true luxury model with all of the upcoming competition. As it stands, the Mercedes EQS and Lucid Air would be on my short list. I suspect the "yoke" will go away in time as it looks ridiculous.

  • Good review. The thing with the new yoke is that they have changed an interface system that works just fine. What they have replaced it with really doesn't make anything better, just different. That's not a move forward, it's effectively a move back. Also, in his talking about better fit and finish, the camera is staring at a huge gap in the door...not what I would expect in a $140k car.

  • I have installed the yoke on my 2018 model 3 and really like it. The big difference is that my model 3 has the two stalks and makes it easier to use, without the extra functions on the yoke. Did not take a long time to get use to, have always driven with my hands on the nine and three o’clock position.

  • Very interesting with the yoke... here in the uk I'm taking driving lessons and we're taught to steer with a push pull method and not to cross our arms over when moving the wheel. With the new yoke you're basically forced to spin your arms around to steer..

  • Hey @mkbhd, would you take a yoke steering with buttons, but as a remedy to the forward/reverse issue, institute a jet pitch mechanism? Like maybe have a locking feature so it’s not accidentally triggered when you’re driving down the road, but after releasing it would allow you to push to go forward, or pull to reverse 🤔 I think that would be interesting

  • Honestly speaking, I am for everything in this new model; however, I am against the new yoke; almost everyone has experienced this; if you're making a sharp turn that requires nearly 360 rotation sometimes, you slip grabbing the steering wheel, and you'll get hold of it pretty first because it's round. With this, I believe that it's not that easy to grab the yoke if you slip, and that's risky. Again, the horn they should have just stuck with the old method; how long will It take me to locate that button and I am also keeping my eyes on the road for some fools trying to cut me off at an exit or some dudes trying to cross when the lights are already green, that's an emergency situation, and I need my eyes on the road.

  • I think in tears of the steering wheel making a half circle with the horizontal downwards would have been a good starting point to get people use to it. So by adjustment you can either do NSEW depending on view that is post preferable.

  • Just got myself a model y and I think the idea of the yoke is to give you that feeling of driving an F1 race car or flying a fighter jet esp if the car is that fast! Tesla’s on point in my opinion but MB could be right about the buttons

    • @Jacob Mees Good point about the sharing of the road. I do the once-handed (“wax off/wax on”) turns on the wheel anyways, so having the yoke should not affect how I drive. I think the that Tesla is projecting into the future with autonomous driving. I do wish that Tesla made the yoke an option and not as a standard. Once FSD is fully realized, then Tesla should offer the yoke as standard.

  • Excellent abridged review. I love everything about the new Model S’s and X’s EXCEPT THE YOKE!!! I have a 2016 Model S P100DL with perforated seats and free unlimited Supercharging (and an opening pano sunroof!). Only 51K miles. I think I’ll be keeping it for awhile. Unless Tesla offers a regular steering wheel. BTW - my 2016 Ludicrous Model S listed for $160,900 - $6K more than the new Plaid Model S. Luckily we had the $7,500 tax credit back then. Maybe we will again!

  • Good review Marques Honestly tesla been a top tech manufacturer I’m really surprised how they introduced this airplane steering wheel (yoke) without applying a progressive steering rack This type of steering wheel (yoke) shouldn’t never go over 90 degrees sideways, bmw introduced in 2004 on 5 series (e60 and e61) progressive adaptive steering system for parking! Complete turn of the wheels on one turn of steering wheel Would be a different experience with 90 maximum turn of the yoke … don’t you agree?

  • Hopefully adaptive steering becomes a thing. I might be incorrect, but I believe that the Tesla is Drive by wire(?). Therefore, the steering could be dialed up tighter at lower speeds and leveled out at higher speeds. I think it’d be relatively easy to minimize winding the wheel past 90 degrees each way. For now, I’d get a suicide spinner for that wheel.

  • Unfortunately, with nearly all hi-tech products, the engineers and decision makers make choices to please themselves (expert users) rather than what would work best for the majority of their users. Also, Marques makes an excellent point about procedures that are now ingrained in our brains and muscles. In a automobile, making these types of changes can be dangerous. I have a Tesly Y reserved, however some recent events and changes are giving me pause. Elon's recent tweet that "almost all input is error" really troubles me regarding the future. That comment is blatantly false, arrogant and indicates disdain for us mere mortals who don't feel the need to turn over every aspect of driving to a computer. Marques, I just discovered you with this video. Your presentation is outstanding. I very much limit my subscriptions, but I am subscribing to this channel. thank you.

  • High likelihood they offer a round wheel at some point, low likelihood they offer physical buttons/stalks. I maintain that they didn't ditch the stalks for futurism's sake, but so that they didn't have to spend any money to develop more of their own switchgear after ditching the Daimler steering column.

  • I ve been driving since so many years and with all my experience i must say that the safety lies first in the hands of the driver that is the steering wheel if it is compromised for looks than the all are at risk while driving becoz the driver cannot make quick responses while in any situations which requires very quick response. so its a bad idea for changing the wheel design at all.

Not only that, but the UI, processing power, touchscreen. You can play PS5-level games on it! It's truly incredible, and honestly if Tesla made the Yolk Buttons physical then it would be a literal flawless car.

  • You mentioned the horn being in a weird spot meanwhile my first car 1998 Saturn coupe had a button for a horn 😆 so the horn tech has aways been changing. As for the yoke, I personally would have no problem for it due to me using many forklift machines but I agree tesla should add a wheel option.

But regarding this Tesla S Plaid I have to admit a friend that test drove it loved the speed, acceleration but the steering wheel is soooo uncomfortable. It's like a F1 race car, pretty ridiculous.     • @Filip Yokes are used on race cars that don't have turn signals and never try to parallel park. That is why the turn signal and gear selector stalks were placed right next to your hands for easy access.

    • Another issue with the yoke is that you have to “cross the wheel” while turning it; your arm crosses the airbag, so if you crash while turning you’ll break your arm with the airbag going off. Whereas a standard wheel allows you to “feed the wheel” and remain as close to the 9-3 mark as possible, your arm doesn’t cross the wheel.

  • I just got my Tesla S LR with yoke and I totally agree with you on the control issues. I'm a futurist, tech guy, and 4 Tesla owner (not all at once), so I'm sort of similar, but the no tactile feedback turn signals are a bad idea, they are well located, but should have distinct "feel". And I think the shifting is even worse. It might be okay with a matched set of tactile buttons on the right thumb spot, but having to take your hand off the yoke is terrible -- and you basically have to glance at it, as there is no way to get that spot on the screen by feel alone, so a K turn is very annoying and there are situations -- like where you drive into somewhere and have to back out in a hurry -- that are frankly unsafe in this configuration. Not to mention I just wouldn't trust the car with a new driver or valet at all right now!

    • @One Of Zero Yeah I can't live without physical buttons. I just can't get good muscle memory for touch screen controls especially if they update the firmware and move things. At least give me a physical nob for the audio volume and AC. Those two are ones touch screen controls either can't be as accurate with or are harder to just go to and change on the go.

  • idea: what if the gear switching was a sort of lever switch on the back of the yoke, so like up to drive, down to reverse, and just leave it in the middle to park. Obviously, you'd need to be stopped and have your foot on the brake to change, so you don't accidentally change the gear while turning. Maybe you could have a gear switch on one side, and a switch for something else on the other side.

  • 8:17 its so hilarious to me as a dutch person to see this video someone that supposedly(im guessing?) drives a fancy EV for the environment and then uses this amount of plastic bags just for groceries xD. I remember when visiting the US I saw this being super normal everywhere. Here in my country we are very encouraged to bring are own bags when shopping and even have to pay for a plastic bag if we need one. Im not judging, just thought id share.

  • Possible solution to accidental triggering of Yoke buttons: what if the haptic buttons behaved like an Apple trackpad? That trackpad also has no moving parts, yet it doesn't register accidental touches, only firm presses (unless configured in software). If the Yoke behaved the same way, I'd think things like the horn & blinkers wouldn't accidentally trigger when rotating the wheel. I have no idea if the Tesla Yoke would even allow such behavior with a software update. Or maybe Apple has a patent on that? Regardless I see a haptic solution without needing to return to hardware buttons. And yes a more firm press would return a second, stronger haptic event (again like the trackpad) for things like constant blinking. Thoughts would be apprenticed, especially by those who have this S (mine's on order).

  • Removing the steering wheel stalks, changing the horn removing the shifter, these weren't problems that needed to be fixed. Most of those functions are not something you want to be fumbling around trying to get the touch sensor to work. Definitely non-starters for me.

  • If you really pay attention though through my experience I’ve seen the majority of bad drivers, drive with both hands. I think it has to do with being comfortable driving and also it’s easier to overcorrect with both hands than one. In normal driving scenarios, not talking about 100mph plus. Either way the wheel is atrocious. I could never drive like that daily id rip my damn head off

  • It’s a great idea for 3022. I can see where Tesla is going and this Yoke makes sense in the grand scheme of that future. AI driven cars with little to no human interaction?! It would make sense that you wouldn’t need the traditional controls. But the major con right now is that we live in a hybrid reality. Where majority of the cars on the road are neither fully autonomous or only partially autonomous. So I agree, I would have transformed the steering wheel into a yoke over time.

  • It's always interesting to see people attempt to use the yoke. Everyone instinctively tries to turn it as if it's a regular circular wheel and they'll also try to catch it as it returns to its original position like it is one. That only works for circular wheels because if you put your hand out to grab the wheel at any point around its axis you're pretty much guaranteed to grab part of the wheel but with the yoke that's not the case. The solution would be to simply put your hand through the large openings on the yoke under the capacitive buttons which also seem to be much larger than the corresponding openings on a regular circular wheel, a feature which I like. If you put your hand through, the amount of distance the wheel can travel from your hand won't exceed a certain limit which is the point where the wheel contacts your hand making it very easy to gain control of the wheel quickly no matter its position. Even if your hand is in a regular steering position, your hand is already right next to the opening making it easy to put your hand through and make quick and controlled sharp turns and you only have to use one hand to do so. The wheel won't slip away because it can only travel so far if your hand is there. I also don't understand why people say that not having the horn in the center is a safety issue. I never use my horn because I don't like the idea of having to move my hand from the wheel to use it especially when driving one handed and especially in an emergency situation where I'd want to keep both hands firmly on the wheel. I'd much prefer the horn button to be right by my thumb where I could easily access it without having to move my hand from the wheel.

With all being said, if they wanted to make it somewhat right, it shouldn’t turn more than 90deg either way. Improved fit and finish clearly evident @2:24 - front door moulding peeling up.

  • Tesla should add in a software update an alternative mode for the touch buttons, from a tap to a 2sec hold function for example, also I imagine a lot of people will either change the wheel entirely or they’ll modify it in some way to resemble a normal wheel.

    • @Moniker Fair enough. The yoke is tricky, as from the dozens of owner reviews I’ve watched on AR-too, most seem to like it, however, this is usually days/weeks after the learning curve. Thus, a test drive would not be sufficient as we’d be biased toward criticizing it. I hope you find the right car for you!
