  • The middle positions seems ideal for people that use their laptop as a desktop computer with external mouse and keyboard and a second display

    • But at that point wouldn’t you want the angle of the screen to be level with your eyes? That seems like a very uncomfortable position to keep your neck at long-term.

  • That 45 degree angle thing will be amazing for educators like myself. When I teach, I need the webcam and I need to write on my screen. On the normal laptop mode, the screen wobbles, and my hand really has to reach in to write. If I use the tablet mode, I can write stably, but my webcam can longer see me (just up my nose). Genius!

    • I suggest you surface pro 7 because you can remove keyboard if you want to use it like tablet.but even with keyboard it will still have touchscreen.

  • These are the 3 modes I always used on the Surface Book. I rarely just used the tablet part of the Surface Book as a standalone device and I suspect not many people did which is why Microsoft did this. This seems likes a more refined and less compromising concept. When my Surface Book is done I'll probably buy this thing.

    • @definitely not obama I have a surface book and thought the idea of being able to take the screen off and use it as a tablet was amazing. I don't think I've ever used it more than once other than to take it off to show people how cool it is

  • the concept is awesome for certain people. For example, I use my laptop for studio work and live sound productions. and having a laptop with ability to put the touchscreen closer to your fingers and in a more stable position (in regular book mode the screen wobbles a lot when you're using the touchscreen) is just awesome for scenarios when you're constantly adjusting parameters and faders on the digital mixer via your laptop

  • This 3 position Surface is perfect for someone like me who travels for work a lot. So as laptop, well I use it as a laptop. In the second condiguration it's perfect for consuming media specifically in hotels and perfect for on airplanes where space in front of you is limited. I can't open my Surface Book all the way on a plane tray. And in flat mode I'd use it for taking notes. I use to use my Surface Pro for notes all the time, but stopped using my Surface Book for notes cause it's too big as a stand alone tabliet. so this new three way config is perfect for my use. MS obviously knows what a professional on the go needs.

  • Well I really love the laptop for a specific reason and this is the movable scrrren. The screen becomes particullary important when you work from home and want to whiteboard something in an online meeting. A normal laptop screen is always bouncing a bit and this one just stays and you can switch inbetween classic and whiteboard sessions wiht a simple move. Great device.

As a student, I have a two in one laptop and i use the writing feature a lot, but i have to flip the laptop everytime and have my keyboard face the table surface which makes it dirty or just feels weird. • @Linus Tech Tips Disagree. As a frequent visitor of AudioScienceReview and being very attuned to objectively good sounding speakers, headphones, and audio equipment in general, the Surface Laptop Studio easily outperforms the latest crop of MacBooks. No other laptop I have heard to date offers comparable sound quality. The audio has depth and heft, holographic imagery, and tonal realism in the spades that the MacBook Pros fall short of. @MobileTechReview had a much more accurate take than this spiffed up regurgitation of a spec sheet.

All 4 of them lost their stickiness and fell off, I had to buy third-party replacements because MS won't do anything. Even now, all but one of the replacement feet have fallen off again, and the bottom of the laptop is covered in scratches. I hope this isn't a problem with the Studio :/

  • I am using Surface Book 2 from more than 2 years now and i would say that they always design Surface range with so much brilliance. Usually, people who sketch use it in a 45° angle to add detailing in sketches. I am a designer too and i do set my laptop on certain angle to have access to all my work boards & work. I guess 45° is not for everyone but definitely we can make most use out of it, for people who just use laptop's for worksheet, watching videos etc may use it just to scroll the screen.

  • An additional way I could use this is to put it in "easel mode" and use the pen to take notes while instructing students to fly airplanes. For example, if I'm talking about a certain technique when flying and the student is looking at me and I asked them General knowledge questions depending on how the answer I'd write it down on the screen versus using paper, and then I can debrief afterward, using the notes I've taken. Saves tons of paper.

    • @Av3570 In your first comment you said "you americans", so I would assume from than that you are not american? If so, I would need to let you know something. Americans are insanely rich and overspend like crazy. There is a low income section of America, but over half of the us earn a very high income. There is 12 million households in the us that are millionaires. Those households will have 24 million kids (avg 2 kids / household). All 24,000,000 kids would have parents that could afford this without even taking a second to think about it. The median income in California is 80k/year. So around 13,000,000 kids will have parents that could, again, easily afford that laptop. Not to mention that gas and taxes are insanely low in the US. At eur 0.60/liter and a sales tax as low as 0% (avg income tax rate of 14 to 28% all the way up). Now in terms of overspending: 65% of Americans drink coffee daily. Where do they drink coffee? Starbucks. At $5/cup, that's $1825 spent on coffee per person per year. Not including the fact that Starbucks sells teas food and other drinks. Starbucks literally uses 4 billion cups a year in America. At $5 a cup. The top selling phone in the us in April this year? iPhone 12 Pro Max. Second? iPhone 12. Not like a pixel 4a or 12 mini, which would be a more budget choice. Those are barely even on the list. There's a bunch more ways Americans burn money, but I don't fully remember all of them. So for a good chunk of Americans, just not drinking coffee for a year can afford them this laptop. And my experience in general has been that parents will help pay for things like laptops for their kids in college(and probably saved a decent amount to do so without it affecting their salaries). Especially if it has to do with their studies (like this drawing laptop for digital artists). I am 100% certain there are millions of American students who could never afford this laptop during high school or college. But I am also 100% certain millions can.

    • @Av3570 This is 100% not a laptop for EVERY student, but if your: A. looking at buying a m1 Macbook AND Ipad pro (~2k together at a minimum, this could theoretically save you money) or a non-apple guy who wants the apple-ish experience B. an art student C. a design student D. a power user This laptop would make sense for those students to get. BTW: A lot of Americans aren't drowning in debt from school, probably the majority of students could afford this and it wouldn't affect them in terms of loans or affordability. This laptop is barely more expensive than a lot of students IPhone's(which they buy yearly), I think they will be just fine.

  • I think the idea of the propped up form (studio mode?) is really just primarily a propped up tablet, with the ability to use a touchpad as well. Instead of thinking of it as being used when you don't want the keyboard but want the trackpad, I'd just think of it as a "propped up tablet mode," which is quite useful in general. It just has optional touchpad use as well.

      Jimmy CerraJimmy Cerra3 أشهر قبل
    • @Jimmy Cerra I have to admit that everyone's height, hand length, palms, and so on are different. I have made a broad generalization that is too vague. But I can not write like this without using a stand, my wife is a full-time artist and she struggled till we bought a stand for her. And her colleagues are also using sturdy stands and no one relies on the hinge or magnets. In my initial comment, I have stressed that it is about the angle. After more thinking on the matter I need to correct myself. Angle is very individual. But I still insist that the rigidity of the overall structure is kinda universal. It's my perspective and the perspective of the people I know. However, I have to admit that it can be different for some people. Surface Pro 6 is a bit different. I have not used it, but as far as I know, its built-in stand is quite sturdy and rigid.

  • The one quirk that's making it difficult to love is the height of the keyboard. That is, the base of the laptop is raised, so your hands don't really sit comfortably if you're using it on a desk. It's fine if you're using it where it's designed to be - on your lap. Overall, I can use it but in some ways it seems to be a bit of a backward step from the Surfacebook 2. At least you could use the screen simply as a tablet, which worked well but suffers from a rather short battery life. Still would have preferred to have the ability to detach it. Screen size is also a step sideways. The 15" has a larger screen. I would say it's a toss if I were to have to choose between the the Surfacebook 2 and the Surface Studio Laptop.

I use a Surface Book 2, and this is definitely up near the top of the list for a replacement. Edit: Thank you for pointing out the lack of an SD card reader! I use a SD card as a secondary hard drive (for security, confidentiality, and compartmentalizing for legal reasons), and that's a big problem for me.

  • I really hope this doesn't mean the Surface Book line is axed. Love what Microsoft is doing with form factors but I think this is a step down from the SB3 with no SD card reader (necessary for any creative work), lower resolution screen (2400 x 1600 VS 3000 x 2000 for SB 13in.), no usb-a port, and non-detachable nature (also rounded screen corners, really?). The 120hz screen is nice but hardly necessary for what the Book line aimed to meet. The cpu+rtx gpu upgrades are definitely welcome though.

  • Gotta say your reviews are looking a bit more crispy lately, but that just may be my imagination. I like the concept of this, hopefully some OEM can do something similar with an SD card reader. I'm planning on doing a lot more travel in the next year (if possible) and a device like this would be ideal for my semi-retirement. I'm hoping that Framework will release a touchscreen for my current daily driver, but I'm not holding my breath. Which does raise the issue, I never thought I would be saying, Linux support. After making the switch to Linux with my Framework, I've decided to not go back to Windows (I still need OSX for some work). I doubt there will be any Linux driver support for this or similar new Tabtops (c) so, I suspect I will be waiting for another year or two before the community pushes something out, unless I want to go explore the hell that is writing drivers.

  • Software dev here: the tent mode for me is ideal for doing touch testing of android apps and web apps. The reason it's so nice because the screen doesn't wobble and (don't tell my boss) but I don't get crumbs on the keyboard when watching Netflix

    legitmontrellthigpenlegitmontrellthigpen3 أشهر قبل
    • @Nathan Brown this. 100% this. There are so so so so many benefits of tent mode. Even the reverse mode. Being able to sit across from someone and just flip the screen over to let them see what I'm talking about or simply touch the screen...shucks. I'm excited right now just thinking of creative ways to do form feedback input

      legitmontrellthigpenlegitmontrellthigpen3 أشهر قبل
    • Also Dev, tent mode (this is like half tent mode) is best for when using an external monitor and keyboard+mouse. The laptops keyboard justs gets in the way if it doesn't fold somewhere. That used to be my setup, a folding laptop plus larger monitor and fully kb mouse at the office, just the laptop when working remote at a cafe or something.

If that becomes a reality it would benefit even way more people for the convince and battery life to be tablet, and a laptop cable of much more but I can definitely see downsides and obstacles to this idea

    • Depends on what you're doing. Bet most Laptop Studio users would be better off buying the low end config, upgrade the SSD themselfes and spend the saved money on a real workstation were CPU, GPU and storage is a upgradable non-issue... The Studio could be used as a second screen with pen input (like Apple sidecar) - but would be nice if Microsoft would make this better available (seems to need Wifi and Intel CPU in the Workstation?) ...

      Käptn WelpeKäptn Welpe3 أشهر قبل
    • @Jason well that depends a bit. For max performance all the time with a top of the line CPU and hefty GPU, yes, you need beefier cooling. However, AMD's U-series mobile chips bring 8 cores without making things too toasty; by default, they only pull 15 watts, which is nothing next to the easily 100 or more being used by a gaming laptop. The downside? It's a little trickier to implement Thunderbolt ports that way, or so I'm told.

I’ll say that this looks like a good pro touch screen laptop that makes it easier to write on the screen. Part of me wonders if maybe MSFT should just make a non-gimmicky pro laptop.

    • @Kuri Cosmos Laptops with this power normally have vents all the way on the Back, Sides, Top and Below so even if you block the bottom vents it can still remain cool. Surface Studio's whole vents "sinks" into the bed and since there're no other vents on the laptop to compensate it will easily overheat above comfortable temperatures.

      QuantiQuanti3 أشهر قبل
    • @Quanti Most laptops don't work well in bed because they all cool with similar stuff in mind. When you're in bed, you use a cooling pad, it's just how it goes. As for Portrait mode, you could but you'd have to switch it into tablet mode first. I imagine for most use cases, that's perfectly acceptable, since landscape is the preferred setting most of the time. I honestly have to disagree about the incline not being good for handwriting.

I wanted a Surface Book 4 that finally gave me the ports AND performance I need, but we got this :( I am also probably one of the few that detaches the screen from the Book base often. Dongles are not an option, especially for the use cases I have for my mobile PCs (like deep-space astrophotography where every port is a blessing and dongles are a no-no!)
