  • I think this does have a possible utility for the office environment. When I was working in a physical office, I would have loved to have this device for all my meetings. It doesn't take up too much space, I can review an agenda on one side, write notes, or work with my project management software on the other side. I could see it being additionally the perfect device for a business lunch, big enough for accessing and sharing key documents and information, but not as challenging as everyone with laptops or even large tablets. If they ditch the cell phone capacity, and the camera tech, focus on Microsoft productivity (lower the price) maybe they could possibly champion this as a portable business tablet... the focus being on business....though I did enjoy seeing how it can be used as a video game console.

    • @Hoang Nguyen Nguyen Just a better selfie camera. If possible since they are tiny, they could make them two, front and back so you dont have to flip to take a pic.

    • @Impulsive Urge hmm. Maybe just one little camera dedicated to scanning documents? That can be really neat. Just enough for office use.

    • I totally agree, it's more for business or for people like myself that doesn't do much picture taking but likes the option if I randomly need it and use it more for bills and such. I always have the aftershock bone conducting Bluetooth headset on for calls so rarely would I need to put it up to my ear. And let's face it phones or tablets have their own set of glitches, likes and dislikes and to often people expect devices to do it all like waving a magic wand and that just isn't realistic. Everyone is different so what one might love someone else might not. I think we need to look at it's main purpose and stop expecting the impossible. I've been a Samsung owner for a long time but with that said I don't like everything about it, it just is what it is. 🤷‍♀️

  • It's a Microsoft product, so it's really in beta until at least version 3. I actually really like it. Get rid of the waterfall glass edge and go back to straight, plonk a flip3 style mini-screen on the front. The camera... honestly I'm wondering if they couldn't just move the current array in Duo 2 into the bezel where the selfie camera resides (and replace it). Don't see why you need both a front-facing and a rear facing camera array when you have two screens that can face opposing directions. Surely you can just use one screen when taking the picture? Do this for Duo 3, keep the price the same or less and I'd be tempted.

    • They could just shift the start of the window a hair away from the hinge to keep the far edge of the screen from becoming unreadable, this would just be a software fix.

  • The best thing about my Surface Duo was the perfect alignment of the two sides when it was closed or folded. I did not care about the camera because I rarely take pictures. I can safely say that if the first version were like this one, I would not purchase it. I also think that the $1400 price mark was too high. I bought the first phone for $1000 because I already knew that most people would not be willing to purchase a device like it. Basically, I knew that the price was going to come down. I assure anyone who wants this phone as well that the price of this one will not stay at $1400 either.

The Duo 2 camera looks More Natural compared to the Fold's typical Oversaturated look.. Making everything look like a Cartoon. Duo is better as a Laptop on a Table etc etc... Fold just looks cooler that's it.

  • I really, really wanted to like this thing. I'm an attorney, my firm uses Surface tablets for trials and hearings, and of course we use Office for everything. OneNote in particular is something that is enormously useful. So I really liked the idea of a Surface phone with two screens, because it seems like it would be a super great productivity device that would integrate perfectly with the rest of my firm's tech ecosystem. The Surface tablets are amazing and were a huge upgrade over the iPads we used to use, for our specific use case. But all the little quality of life issues that this device has is going to keep me with Samsung. The fact that it doesn't fold flat with the screen open in particular is a huge deal breaker for me, especially because there's no outside screen. I think if there was an outside screen it wouldn't be a big deal, but if I can't have it be flat in my pocket and still be able to glance at my messages, then it's a no-go.

  • I feel like a lunatic whenever I say this but I adore the concept here. if I had the money to throw around on something like this I'd love to have one. just the thought of being able to do split-screen productivity tasks with that much screen real estate sold me the moment I saw it. that being said, god why are those cameras there. i hate it. i really hate it.

    cynthiacynthia2 أشهر قبل
    • @UltimateAHP i mean like yeah i'm not buying one i just like the concept. folding phones are nice, but I much prefer the aspect ratio and screen real estate on this thing. it's really just the form factor and the layout I'm into. I wish it had any chance of becoming a viable product, because I think if it did they'd also end up being a lot cheaper than true foldables since you're not paying for that folding screen tech. as it stands right now tho, you're absolutely right. it's a mediocre product, it's way overpriced, and Microsoft will abandon it

      cynthiacynthia15 أيام قبل
    • You might as well get the samsung fold 3 or the oppo fold phone if you're really into that kind of stuff. The surface duo just isn't sustainable enough for long term use with the amount of issues it has. Plus Microsoft is most likely gonna cancel this soon like they do with most failed products they've made.

  • I really, really like the idea behind this device. The dual screen implementation is a neat idea and allows for some functionality candy bar and foldable phones don't have. It just can't complete with a Note or S series because they have had 10 years to perfect the UI and feature library. It also doesn't have a great form factor and the original was difficult to use for that reason.

  • i recently got the surface duo 1 for the much reduced price. honestly, i love it. it's my secondary device next to my iphone 12 pro max. i rarely span apps across screens, more for using two apps at the same time. this isn't a foldable tablet, but more of a device with 2 screens. it's definitely not worth the full price tag for either models. seems like the 2 has the same small bugs at the 1. but overall the duo does exactly what i need it for, so i'm pretty happy with it. why can't it read external usb drives though?? i might be missing something, but haven't been successful.

  • Thank you for your review. I appreciated your perspective. However, as a user of the Duo since last December, I have come to really utilize and enjoy having the two screens. I have not had the software problems you mentioned with it. I agree that the camera was far from optimal, so I am looking forward to trying the Duo 2. I believe that the Duo 2 will be better and is a form factor that I hope will continue to be available. I would not like to go back to a single screen device. That would decrease my productivity too much! The two screens on the Duo have been the right size, and not too narrow like the Z-Flip.

  • I like this form factor. I carry two phones from two different service providers. I would love it is they could be joined together like this and share storage and apps but assign mobile services to each screen. Also, I don't think the interface needs to span across both screens. The point of having two screens like this would be using two apps at once. So like a PDF or a video on one and a text editor or email on the other. Also, it would be neat to have it display two document pages at once like a book. And of course if turned sideways one screen could become a keyboard or virtual controller. I like this idea, but they need to stop trying to make it something it isn't.

    Daniel KennedyDaniel Kennedy6 أيام قبل
  • I've got the first Duo. My two expectations for Duo 2 were: 1. reduce the screen's middle gap to the bare minimum (have the two screens come nearly flush, maybe 1/2 mm away to avoid chipping, anyway, make it an almost uninterrupted large display, or else work out a foldable display, whatever). 2. Optional Windows-on-ARM boot (make it a nano Surface PRo X). If Microsoft had achieved that, which is not unreasonably difficult, they'd secure a huge following, and in a minute, erase all the bad feelings of their previous failures at making phones. Too Bad!

  • One of the things that never really clicked for me until I owned a Z Fold 3, is how much I would rely on the outside screen to do regular smartphone things. It's about the flexibility of being able to use it unfolded when I want to. There are some days that I never open up to the big screen - and that's okay. Knowing all of this, now, I can completely understand from a physical convenience perspective, that the Surface Duo 2 can be a pain to use, because you HAVE to open it up to use it, even if you don't want to use both screens. Combine that with the admittedly poor camera placement, and it becomes a very cumbersome daily driver for most people. Microsoft marketed the first Duo as less of a phone replacement, and more as a business-minded tablet supplement, and I think it works fine for that, but the tradeoffs make it a difficult pill to swallow for $1500. The software bugs, though, even if the phone was otherwise perfect, is unacceptable at just about any price point these days, let alone at an eye-watering $1500. Cheers to another great video, Marques.

I have been taking tons of photos on vacation and when you are moving and running as round you want a quick couple pictures then back in the pocket. Then open it and go thought everything when you get to a resting place. I think the duo needs a dedicated companion if not a third screen a watch as capable as an apple watch.

  • Honestly, I think they should consider making a solo screen device instead. Design-wise, I think they get a lot more right than wrong, and I think a standard body phone with the Surface’s aluminum body would be pretty sick.

    Jeremy NelsonJeremy Nelson2 أشهر قبل
    • They already did that with Lumia phones. Aluminum alone wont save them. If they did what you said then they would just simply be Microsoft branded android phones. Nothing special. A lot of companies already did beautifully designed phones but they all failed. Design alone wont save a company.

      Impulsive UrgeImpulsive Urge29 أيام قبل
    • @Jeremy Nelson A pretty design is barely worth entering the market for. Do something or do not, if it's purely aesthetic then there's no reason to enter the market.

    • @user10476 But that’s the thing- there are so many phone manufacturers out there, but Microsoft can leapfrog so many of them on name recognition alone. They’re so busy trying to hit home runs that they keep leaving easy doubles on the table.

      Jeremy NelsonJeremy Nelson2 أشهر قبل
    • @Lee Griffiths I think it lies more in design than hardware. Sure, the specs need to be good, but outside of 2, maybe 3 manufacturers, android phones aren’t always that pretty. A solid design based on Surface computer design architecture and high end specs for a reasonable price could be just the thing to get Microsoft to actually stick around in the phone market.

      Jeremy NelsonJeremy Nelson2 أشهر قبل
  • A note, is that Microsoft used better glass on the inside than on the outside of the Duo 2 so setting it down with a screen down isn't as volatile than you would expect. Edit: An outside screen may be useful, but given the use case for Surface Duo I don't think it is necessary. Stuff like spanning apps, I find is better vertically, like scrolling a long email or web page or forcing the keyboard to the bottom screen vs attempting to span horizontally. There are a few bugs still that need to be fixed, but I have not seen the touch issues that you saw.

    Nicolas JancekNicolas Jancek2 أشهر قبل

  • I agree about the entire premise being somewhat flawed, and I said the same thing when the first one was announced. Not being able to do shit without opening it, and having a noticeable gap between the 2 screens are huge flaws IMO, because then the remaining appeal is for people who want to run 2 apps side by side, but I don't think there's many people who really care about that. This ain't the future. It's clinging on to the past. If it had a proper foldable screen with no gap, a smaller screen on the outside, no camera bump (I realise that's hard to do) etc., then it would be an attractive prospect. Also, it feels like MS's software is always beta quality, even though you're running the public builds, whether it's Windows, the Xbox OS, or whatever. To have a chance in this market, you really have to nail it in every way and this doesn't come close IMO, so I wouldn't be surprised if it gets heavily discounted in a few months and they don't bother with a 3rd attempt.

Yes, cameras are import but I feel like the camera enthusiasts would not go for a folding phone. Look at the top line laptops. They never have great cameras. I feel like an above mid-range camera for a folding/flip phone would be fine. Leave the top range camera for the regular flagship phones.

Remove the phone, give it Wacom EMR compatibility, have the original duo's flatness, make it more affordable... I could see it giving Samsung and Apple a run for their money when it comes to notebook and sketchbook replacement devices. Especially if the had a version, possibly the Surface Neo, that was around the size of two iPad Mini's stuck together. So folded it would match the iPad Mini but it could unfold to have the second screen function. I could see that being really handy for note taking and sketching. Heck, the duo in this form could even work great if they had a good eReader function where each screen displayed a page and it felt a bit more like reading a physical book.

Maybe the 3th generation will be better. They cost a lot of money so it must be good. We will see. For now I keep it at samsung fold2. Greetings sebastiaan

  • I was an original adaptor of the Windows Lumia Phone. I skipped the first Duo because a tiger never changes its stripes. That being said, I think he got a little too much into the form factor of the rear camera when the iPad Pro have a protruding Camera Bezel and you can’t lay those flat either. The price point is high, but when the competition is a Surface Pro X, or an LTE equipped iPad Air, then the prices are probably comparable and reasonable.

  • I have a Duo 2, and just want to comment. I have been noticing that how it closes and doesn't show anything due to the lack of a front screen, has made me more attentive to the real world. I look at the side screen to make sure I'm not missing anything. But having a closed screen has improved my human interactivity more than I would have expected. It may sound wild, but I am getting the best of both worlds.

    • Everything. Not sure what you mean. I use the phone for everything, but when it's closed I'm not constantly distracted by every icon that shows up on the screen. Which, for example, at work, makes me more attentive to my job. At home, makes me more attentive to my surroundings. It's not a crazy difference, but a noticeable one.

    • @Kasallamacher Well I don't know you, but I'm using one and it can be a good tablet depending on the use case. Can't carry a big tablet with myself everywhere. I would say that it is a jack of all trades, master of none, with some sprinkle of bugs that I really don't see as that bad. "Also, why wouldn't one buy the Galaxy Fold?" Good question, the 256gb Galaxy Z Fold 3's price is $1800, I bought a new 256gb Surface Duo for $389. Surface Duo has arguably better multitasking than Z Fold I believe, maybe the best multitasking phone? Galaxy Z Fold is an expensive device for sure, what makes it even worse is the fact that you can easily scratch its screen with your nail. The screen is literally a plastic, the crease is doomed to get worse. Not to mention my Surface Duo specifically is thinner and lighter. You can also adjust the hinge of the screen to say for example laptop mode, unlike Z Fold which I believe is just open and close. Honestly it is just a waste of money if you buy a $1000 phone.

      AR 7AR 72 أشهر قبل
    • @AR 7 no it's no tablet, that's the issue. And it's not like tablets aren't portable already. It's more like the jack of no trades. Also, why wouldn't one buy the Galaxy Fold?

  • If I were designing the Surface Duo 3, I think they should add a big display where the Windows logo is. If they need to put the logo on it, put it on the back where the cameras are. The new display needs to be as big as--if not bigger than--one of the inside displays. That way you can use the device *actually folded flat* with the cameras on the back like a normal phone, and then use it horizontally like a Nintendo DS when you want to see more content. Though I guess the folding design could work vertically by mimicking book-reading. Microsoft try really hard and then release hardware that sucks. I'm actually kinda rooting for them because I feel bad for them (as I type this on a Mac while awaiting my incoming 13 Pro Max, totally not biased whatsoever). But here's hoping they can find their groove.

  • I've become kinda obsessed with the idea of the perfect remote-desktop device. Something you can use to make a quick modification to a video or upload a file while away from the desk. While these new improvements do nothing for me there, I'm pretty interested in the original duo as it gets cheaper.

  • I would definitely use a device like this, if: * It'd be a little bit thicker (to accomodate a camera module, maybe a bigger battery, larger side sensor, and an outer screen) * It'd have some sort of smaller glanceable display * It'd have a community behind to tweak software internals with, OR if it'd just have more of a polished software * Camera wasn't as meh as it is. I know it's very much possible * It'd cost half or at least 2/3 of it's price, which is still quite a lot

    BoopyTheFoxBoopyTheFox2 أشهر قبل
  • So this device is a straight up disaster. Now I want to preface this by saying I'm a huge fan of their Surface line up, and I think the first Duo showed a ton of promise, not to mention a beautiful design. Now I've been using the LG Velvet for over a year now with a dualscreen case, this puts in the same kind of usage as the Duo for the most part. Yes the space between the 2 screens is much larger, there is a decent camera on the back that sits flat due to the case and all that, but in general same experience. Now while I like the idea of 2 screens, I've found that I don't use it nearly as often as I would like. It's really quite large, not a single screen, and really comes down to special use cases. So I use it most of the time as a single screen. Like the Duo 2, I have the issue that I can't use my camera unless opened up, this is extremely annoying, and makes taking pictures not a good experience at all. You feel like 1 of those old people using a tablet to take pictures. The thickness of the Velvet is a lot thicker then the Duo, but I imagine the Duo 2 is at least as thick on the camera bump side, this isn't comfortable, and when you consider how big the device is, it's not helping for sure. All of this gets me to the point, when does this device feel good? It doesn't do anything closed, it can't take pictures in a single display mode, it doesn't feel good using it in a single display mode, so it pretty much becomes a foldable tablet, but is that really what you want as a phone? Especially when you can get the Fold? The Duo had a lot of shortcomings, but it's super thin design and single screen usage, at least made the design choice sound, sure the camera sucked and plenty of people didn't like it, oh and the software sucked as well, and not to mention the hardware, but at least it had a clear purpose, clear design choice. But the Duo 2 just feels like it does everything mediocre at best. Honestly if I had to choose, I would pick the first Duo of the second. But if I had to throw that kind of money at a phone, I'd just get the Fold 3, because I do feel I would use the inner screen for vids etc.

    GohanSSJZGohanSSJZ2 أشهر قبل
    • @Mike Morland It's exactly about how it should be seen. The Duo had a clear idea first how it should be seen. I think that's great. The second one threw that out. They added the camera's to get a bigger audience, but with it they made the device worse for it's original purpose.

      GohanSSJZGohanSSJZ2 أشهر قبل
    • I would hardly say this device (or the first one) is a disaster, IMO, it should be seen less as a high-end phone and more like a folding tablet.

  • I wanted to switch to this from my LG V60 with two screens I always use. So I am used to the nuances of having to unfold to use and take pictures. But the cameras just are not good enough STILL. I am not downgrading from what I have for that. And the missing text in the middle of the screen could possibly be fixed with a software update, to stretch what is displayed on the edge. But its probably best that they go back to flat screens and make the bezels as thin as possible. Fix the cameras and make the screens flat again and I would possibly pick up a Surface Duo 3

  • It feels like the design of the original Duo was frozen before folding screens had got to where they are now - that's why it had two screens. And Duo 2 is Microsoft digging further into the same hole. At least that's how it looks to me. The buggy touch response, software and missing text is unforgivable at any price.

    Frequent TravellerFrequent Traveller2 أشهر قبل
  • It needs to have two sets of hinges. This way, you almost “flip” it to dual screen so the camera stays on the back. Another option is the main screen is “full screen” but the fold out screen is just slightly smaller, housing the camera on the back of the main display. I think this phone was too early. Another 2-3 years when they get the foldable screen thing down and I think they’re in business.

  • A UX designer here: What they need to do is to focus on the UX and the specs. Make it $2000 but make it work perfectly. Snapping a quick photo by opening it up and quickly clicking a quick snap button, getting rid of bugs and make it run super smooth, making it thicker since battery life is a problem as well so killing to birds with one stone - battery life and camera bump problems. Putting high specs in it, SD888, 16gb ram, high quality 3+ cameras, etc making it compete with Z Fold3. Maybe with added thickness also a stylist inside (which zfold doesn't have) etc etc so many good ideas but it seems like their UX designer suck and don't actually test the product or are too scared to speak up. 99% of these problems should have been noticed within first 5 mins of using the device. This is almost embarrassing tbh.

  • I am not sure that there is any way to "save" the Surface Duo, but maybe repurpose it. Instead of pushing the Surface Duo in the direction of a flip phone, they should push it into the direction of a tablet. A mini tablet, where it can compete with the ipad Mini. In MKBHD's ipad mini review, I see that it rests very nicely in the palm of his hand. The Surface Duo seems to do that as well. These are just my thoughts. However, if they continue with Surface Duo 3, I would add on some sort of grip to make it not slip and fall out of my hand. That is the first thing that has scared me about this. Another suggestion is that they need to really blow our minds with either software, body design, cameras, or sound to make this product worth 1,499. So far, none of these have come to fruition.

For reading text, it should be held sideways so the gap runs horizontal. • a productivity device keep it sleek as the first one , work more on the software , remove the back camera and instead just maintain a best possible selfie camera on the inside for video calls ,make sure their is an optimized chromium browser for it , properly optimized Microsoft office suit , have a team optimize messaging apps and google services ie mail , sheets , maps , meet, etc. most important maintain the sleekness ,you can add a side finger print scanner to reduce times for passwords once the user opens it up they are already in .

  • i think they should make it slightly thicker as to ditch the camera bump. Lose the curved edges and just make the bezel at the hinge as small as possible. And add a small accessory display on the outside.

  • I ABSOLUTELY LOVE PLAYING WITH IT IN BEST BUY. It is mini version of my Samsung Galaxy Flex. I prefer the 360 style. My use is Maps, Movies calls text while driving... best layout. 👌 I love the layout just wish I could afford to drop 1600. The full cost of my laptop on a pocketable phone

  • Microsoft's fundamental flaw is they always have crappy software implementation. They fail to realise that the hardware is only ever as good as the software. What kind of quality control can they have that lets things like the missing text in the middle of the screens get signed off as a complete product?

    Al FullardAl Fullard2 أشهر قبل
  • They should ditch the outside cameras and have great "selfie " cameras, so it can fold nice and have fast photoshooting. Thicker is also ok to make that happen

    • True. People can say this is a foldable phone but it's actually a foldable tablet. Tablets don't need any camera that isn't the selfie cam

  • I am still on the fence. Love the concept and design but the reported buginess has me on the fence still. I love the craftiness of microsoft products but there history with devices normally goes version 3 is the one you want. I just got that itch and wanted something new to play with but I'll Stay for now with my Galaxy 21 ultra.

  • I always thought the Surface Neo made more sense than the Duo. On a tablet/2in1 this form factor makes more sense than a phone. Also the camera is not so much of a big deal on a tablet/2n1.

  • I honestly feel like we didn't really need a camera for this stuff, perfectly fine with the way they had it before...they should make 2 versions for that kinda thing. 😅

  • A developer nightmare. Why optimize apps for the Surface Duo? It would just be a hassle and in the end the devices are hardly in circulation. The cost factor is just too big to adapt apps to this display solution. Why does Microsoft always have to release such products unfinished and unthought out, I don't get it.

  • It seems like this takes the opposite approach of foldables. It’s kind of like a device for people who don’t want a smart phone, but want a tablet. And it like combines them into one. It’s not useful for use as a traditional phone but is as a tablet or planner type deal but can be used as a phone if needed. Ironically seems better for a minimalist or less connected lifestyle who still want to get work done.

  • I personally think that the larger version of this, the Neo, was a far better idea. The ability to have a laptop or a dualscreen monitor set-up on the go with a magnetic wireless keyboard is super appealing. As for in a phone, it just seems cumbersome! The camera don't fit, it's too wide for a pocket, and the whole thing appears indecisive.

    TitanskrallTitanskrall2 أشهر قبل
    • they been playing with this idea for a long time now and the neo was the culmination if you ask me but i guess they went with the phone over neo and now neo is delay for a long while

      EmceeRadEmceeRad2 أشهر قبل
    • I agree, if they're trying to sell dual screen as a tool for productivity, it makes more sense to do it with a mini laptop with an actual keyboard.

    • Surface phone was always my dream: full windows x86 programs in your pocket. Now I don't know why I would ever need that. Folding devices are all rubbish. If I want a larger screen I just switch to a surface or laptop. I can only see a future of your phone being so powerful that it's your entire computer and it connects to different sized screens.

  • I would think, an idea for that would be that the outside camera system would be thinker, to fold it completely

  • This is a case where if it was nicely priced everyone would be happy and give it try - but its truly overpriced for what it is - i wanted to play with this thinking it would be around a grand for one with less ram but due to price -just gonna wait til i pull the trigger on a GFold
