Retro Tech: Game Boy

The Game Boy is the most popular handheld gaming console ever. It allowed us to take games like Tetris, Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda with us on-the-go, changing the gaming industry and our free time forever. On the 30th anniversary of its release, Marques Brownlee unboxes and explores how the Game Boy came to be, it's impact on society, and why it's leaving us feeling so nostalgic.

  • Amazing vid. I just don't like how they say that being a kid in the 80s was painful because we didn't have tablets and phones and stuff. That's not true. We were happy with whatever we had. It's not like we had a feeling of missing out, we didn't even know that stuff would ever exist. I'm an 80s kid and I had a very happy childhood. I actually probably get more bored now than when I was little! I'm also happy that I got to witness the birth of all that technology we now take for granted. And I'm sure the new generations will have a similar feeling 20 years from now. When the PS9 comes out in 20 years, you'll look back at your PS5 with fond memories in mind. It's just the circle of life!

  • I WAS BLOOOOOOWN WITH CHIPTUNE DANG MAAAANNN! THANK you so much MARQUES for this episode, never had Game Boy my entire life cause parents never let me have on (or any other game consoles 😂) but seeing this was SUPER WEIRD that I somehow felt I lived with a Game Boy my whole life. Do I make any sense? I mean remember when you talked about teleportation in one of your episodes, as we know the brain does not recognize reality from illusions when it comes to visualizing. Yeah still doesn't sound like I make any sense ahaha but all I want to say is I never felt this experience before of being transported to a space in time and felt like I was really there then realizing (after watching this video) that I wasn't actually there, I heard back the car engines outside in the streets, the laptop I'm using to watch this and all these techs around me snapping me out of a "dream". This was a very weird experience I'm dead serious, and I LOVED IT! Thank again Marques for taking me back in time (: -- WHO SAID TELEPORTATION WAS NOT DOABLE? Just had the experience without any VR equipment, entirely transported.. how about that?

  • 6:05 First prototype of the Nitendo DS, 1982. I think what sets apart Nintendo from its competitors today (Sony, Microsoft) is that they've always been a game company first. They made games and used technology as it developed, while Sony and MS made technology first and then entered gaming as an additional market. Recently, Nintendo's game consoles like the Wii (U) and Switch are technologically inferior to its competitors, but their game franchises and characters are the most iconic in the world.

  • Theres something I absolutely loved about cartridges. They felt like there was a real thing inside it. It felt so much better to put a new cartridge in the console and see a new game come up than it is to just place a CD into a drive or even a tiny SD card into a Switch. Theres more storage on the newer and smaller things but something was lost along the way. I feel like holding a game when I hold a cartridge like I feel like holding music when I hold a record. Todays digital world and tiny SD cards though? They do absolutely nothing to add to the experience, they subtract from it if anything. A great game doesnt need anything more, but something to hold just really does something to the experience.

These were essential computers in my formative years, and existed alongside the Apple ][, Macintosh and early IBM-PCs. Honestly, if there was one early home computer that I think was on a level with the Apple ][ and Macintosh, that had to be the Commodore 64. And these all lead into the Amiga family of computers.

    • @TheWitness ah yes I see using iPhone as proof that smartphones are not durable when android phones are a lot less durable. Though I agree that durability wise, older phones like Nokia 3310 is better than smartphones. But really calling out Apple as if they were the only tech company that had less durability when other manufacturers’ products are shittier durability-wise. At least, an iPhone could last longer than the usual two years. Hell, my iphone 5c is now currently used by my baby cousin. Said cousin is also using an iPad 2 full of cracks and chips. We didn’t even replaced anything on the iPad. The iphone 5c did get repaired though once in 2018 but not repaired by Apple. My sister’s iPhone 6s is still working and supported by Apple and also my iPad Air 2. So sure call out Apple for their lesser durability as if other manufacturers lasts a lot longer or are supported longer than Apple products.

    • TheWitness If you were offered the Newest IPhone or an Android, which would you pick & why! I’m on the fence because I’ve never had an Android! I’m almost afraid to go with the Android because I’ve always had IPhone.

  • Let’s be clear on one thing, I would LOVE it if you reviewing retro tech wasn’t just a AR-too red series, I would love to see you try an old Windows or first iPhone, or even the first television, I hope you don’t stop after season 2...

  • I don’t collect sealed stuff, but watching you cut that seal was hard because I know I could trade that for a fat stack of awesome games that I would actually play. It was very hard watching you torch one too...
