    • After looking at A LOT of laptops, I ended up getting the P17 think pad laptop, configured, just like this. The Apple M1 laptops lack a good bit/they have small screens/no 17.3inch screens,no options for multiple internal storage devices, for splitting up work loads,Apple ALSO ONLY offers 64GBs of RAM/no 128GBs of RAM options, like other more high end brands/manufacturers. The laptop I decided to go with has these specs, so far I'm really liking it: It has an Intel xeon W-11950H VPro processor 128GB RAM 17.3inch 3840x2160p 500 nits Nvidia RTX A5000 Max-Q 16GB It has three 2TB SSDs and a 7200RPM 6TB hardrive,so 12TBs, I will have Linux Manjaro AND Windows 10 on it. Its has 4G LTE built in as well. I NEEDED a good laptop/a high end/powerful laptop, to run two OSs at once and for emulating MULTIPLE devices at once/for testing code.

It’s time to accept that new MacBooks are great. Even I hated Apple’s laptops, I suggest that you should be more open-minded when it comes down to tech. Once you have used the machine, you have every right to criticize it (exceptions do apply - example is repairability, notch but no Face ID, HDMI 2.0 instead of HDMI 2.1). If you don’t like MKBHD personally, don’t watch and/or unsubscribe and move on.

  • I likely will not touch the edges of the power of this laptop, but this is one of the best reviews of a laptop I've ever seen in it's completeness, comprehensiveness and clarity. It covered every conceivable aspect I would be interested in and did it in such a way and with a clear explanation that I am now able to not only be confident of purchasing a new MacBook Pro, but which one and in which configuration. That is a very important aspect, as I work for a non-profit and need to make a definitive decision and not have to regret it - because I'll have it a very long time. Kudos!

      Adam MarczakAdam Marczak2 أشهر قبل
    • @Adam Kija They aren't pro quite yet... not because of the performance, but because of the warranty and lack of support for apps. The lack of onsite warranty is a shame for a 5000 dollar machine, and the fact that many professional apps (specifically cad/3d modelling) don't have support for them quite yet should deter many pro consumers. Also the lack of upgradability/repairability is an absolute dealbreaker for many pros, but that's an stupid Apple mentality thing which unfortuantely seems like it will never go away, because other than that, these new macbooks seem great. Another note for video editors: because the drive is non-upgradable, editing off an external ssd which will the safer option to avoid excessive drive wear, but it will likely be slower and higher latency than an internal ssd (not to mention that it will be an annoyance and one more thing to carry around)

My younger brother is obsessed with HP gaming laptop but I want to get him a MacBook and a ps4 for the gaming because what’s the use of a gaming laptop if it has to be plugged 24/7? IMO it’s better to use a more efficient and long lasting laptop which is the MacBook

      Martin OlisaMartin Olisa2 أشهر قبل
    • @Martin Olisa it will still perform well, but currently you have more limited number of games and not optimized for gaming. If either of those things matter to you, you could get more value for your $ and more speed from a high end windows gaming laptop. However, if you plan to do a hybrid of work and game, personally id always chose macbook bc for me work is first and gaming is second. Another thing to consider.. many high end gaming laptops need to be plugged in 24/7 to achieve good performance… in my opinion this defeats the purpose of a laptop.

      BrunchBrunch2 أشهر قبل
  • I've always said people look at notches wrong. if you view it as cutting into your screen, then yes it's annoying. Instead, you need to see it as your screen gaining ears into where the bezel used to be, to move time/date/battery/menu items up out of the way. of course software has to incorporate it smartly as well, or you will get the notch encroaching where it isn't wanted or blocking things.

  • As someone starting college in January as a IT Major this is the machine I’m going with. I will be getting the 14 with the best Pro processor with the 1tb of storage. My 2009 Unibody Mac Pro doesn’t even work with the software my school requires. I feel old but this will be a welcome upgrade. I really like the M1 Chips. Seems Apple did something right and really nailed it this time around. Also giving the M1 Chips to the 13 was a good way to force users to get the Air or the 14 because the 13 is about useless right now.

  • The other difference between the maxed-out 14" and 16": the maximum GPU clock speed is about 200MHz lower for the 14". If you go with the 24-core GPU in the 14", you get the full 1295 MHz GPU clock speed. So, the 24-core GPU in the 14" is almost the same performance (because of the lower clock speed for the 32-core) but it costs $200 less and probably burns through the battery a little more slowly. There's a video that talks about this, Max Tech I think? BTW, the 24-core version is implemented by disabling two cores in each of the four (eight-core) clusters, *not* by disabling one of the eight-core clusters. This is likely superior to disabling one full eight-core cluster from a performance point of view (memory system implementation details too detailed to be explained here).

  • As someone who stated editing in 1981 with 16mm film, then moved to 1” video, ¾” video, Betacam, Avid, Premiere, Final Cut Pro Studio (I was apple’s broadcast guy in Asia PAC for a couple of years working with a whole lotta big houses in the region) I have to agree with you 100%. M1 powered MBPs are the tool that finally frees content creators from a desk in a room…anywhere. I thought we had hit that point in 2004-6, but this makes all that look and feel like serious delusion. I’m running Resolve, for a whole lot of reasons, and I refuse to work with more than 4k, but lately I’ve been including more footage from a GoPro 10 in 265 “just because “. As a test, I have transcoded less of it and my DSLR footage to ProRes, which has been my workflow for almost 20 years just as a way to avoid the unavoidable space bar struggle to play thing. I decided on the 14” purely because I (usually) do my work out of a backpack roaming around South East Asia, and I can slide this into my 30L everyday pack, with cameras, lenses, lights and get on a scooter/bus/train/plane and go to the next location. I totally get what you mean about a few of the ports being not quite as bleeding edge as the could have been, but, as someone who’s dropped far more money than they should have on aluminium shells over the years, there were so often too many over specced ports that were a total waste. Case in point: Thunderbolt. Great standard, piss poor adoption by the marketplace. Apple users were never a big enough demographic for affordable devices to take advantage of it. Finally the rest of the user world has caught up and we’re getting the advantage of usability and reasonable price. So, all things considered, I’m happy as a pig in mud, and once things open up again, I’m really excited to get back on a plane and actually be able to do serious, serious content creation absolutely, unequivocally anywhere I want to lift the lid on my sweet little space grey piece of joy.

    • @TCup_1 Last time I checked Apple is 4 years ahead of everyone on mobile performance (with the A14 which was *last years* iPhone). Apple has a monopoly on the watch industry with performance no one can touch. Apple has a monopoly on the tablet industry with performance no one can touch. Apple has a monopoly on the video industry with performance no one can touch. Just because iPhone' requires less ram than every other phone in 2021, now all of a sudden you assume its less at a higher price point. You are clearly out of your mind and have zero 0 idea what you are talking about and probably have never even used an Apple product in your life besides display samples at a store when you were bored.

I myself have been frustrated and had thought seriously about lugging my iMac(the need for a good lightweight but rugged case). Good to know M1 MacBook can replace that! Efficiency and performance comes at the cost of modularity for arm. This isn't to say that Apple doesn't have miiiiiiles to go with right to repair, but I think the components being soldered onto the mobo is justified in this case.

  • As an engineer, even one who doesn't use any apple products* I have to respect the m1 chips. For a while, improvements in CPU/GPU computing have been very incremental. The m1s are a legitimate big step forward. They're not the fastest processors in existence, but they keep up with the top tier (at least core for core in terms of CPU, GPU being a bit harder to determine with Apple's "cores'" being a bit opaque) at fractions of the power consumption. The power draw in most (or at least many) scenarios is no more than the equivalent of between 1-3 leds (often 50% or even 25% of what an intel CPU would draw) , while still giving top tier performance. Which is crazy. Huge respect to the engineers responsible for creating these. I wish Apple was the type of company to license this kind of stuff so I could run whatever software and OS I want on these chips. * Mostly due software... the closed ecosystem/lack of customizability, and I'm not a fan of iOS or macOS

After all, Autodesk do have several quality Mac apps like Maya and Autocad that run in Rosetta 2 (without bootccamp, vmware. parallels, or windows), so it shouldn't be too much trouble to convert them from native mac Intel apps to native mac m1 apps.

The MacOS though is just too restrictive and It has two bars for whatever reason one up top with the menu bar and one at bottom to house apps, why? It takes away the real estate unnecessarily unless you are working in full-screen mode. Now that Apple has made the best performing laptop, I wish they focus on improving the MacOS.

  • Previous Macs had lot of memory leak issues, and I dont think this will be any better as the OS still remains the same. Also its not only about having a laptop for video editing. It seems that Apple knows this part and is in general focusing mostly in that segment. Not focusing on increasing the apps that are compatible with it , the apps that are mostly used in the Engineering industries are not compatible much. Also Apple knows that companies dont want to pay a premium on one laptop just to get a MAC. So basically thats why Mac is still mostly a household laptop with a premium tag. About memory, I dont know how its managed much, but have seen that a 64GB RAM Mac ends up using almost 90% of it while running servers which a windows 32GB machine handles easily. So other than video editing, I am not sure what else is so good about it.

I think Apple could definitely make a device that's supposed to run games from the App Store with high fidelity and refresh rate. I don't think it would sell well, but it's definitely possible.

    • @J Andersen software just isnt there for it. steam is the core of pc gaming, so they just needed to design the hardware to throw it in. MAYBE for iOS with the app store, but on mac there just isnt much

  • Looks super promising, especially for Videos and Final Cut. But just as side comment on the exterior...it's really ugly and bulky! I can't understand how they did it so ugly compared to the previous one

  • I'm an intermediate nature and wildlife photographer. I used videos a lot in my digital storytelling. I've been reluctant to buy an Apple laptop because of their lackluster customer service at times. Do you think it's a good buy for someone like me? I absolutely enjoy your thoughtful advice and reviews.

    • @cjgoeson They do but it also depends on the location. Where I come from, the service is not so great.

  • Honestly, as a university student, the touchbar is really useful, on Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Full of shortcuts and writing management, which made taking notes a unique experience

  • I use a lot of Native Instruments software, and at this point the only thing keeping me from buying an M1 Max MacBook Pro is the lack of compatibility between NI's programs and Monterey. It's a shame because these new models are incredible, and even though I really want one it would be of no use for what I'd need it to do. The Logic Pro X producer crowd got lucky, but the rest of us are screwed.

  • I think apple should add 14” with m1 and 8gb ram 256ssd for 1500s, touchbar is hated by pro. But businessman like me love touchbar

  • Hated the touchbar so i'm soo happy this one doesn't have it. Just bought the M1 16 inch. Love the shape, size and screen. I upgraded my mac after having my last one for 8 years (don't judge me). You have me even more excited. :)

    • @momento I think there have been android laptops - a tablet with no touch but a keyboard and mouse essentially.

      Joshua BritainJoshua Britain2 أشهر قبل
    • @Bruh Bruh not really, an android laptop is a significant downgrade from any desktop grade device. And in 2021, why wouldn't you go for a Chromebook as a low end laptop anyway? As for the Mac hate, I'm not saying they're worth the money but they are not bad machines by any means, in fact far from it.

  • one problem i found with my M1 Max, when connecting to external monitor, the mouse drag didn't work, sometime it works but most of the time the drag is stuck. I don't know if this monterey or M1 things. I use benq 32 inch, and it works fine when connecting to my old 16inch 2019 mbp.
