  • Wow! I'm impressed with this dude's professional view of the review on the iPhone' new display. I'm not an Apple fan, you'll but this is a great improvement over the current screen, so I wish the best for Apple, as for the first time in a long time, they're thinking of long-term repair costs on their products. Very good review!!

  • This is so great to see sapphire glass coming to the market! In the testing here though, it's really nothing impressive to not cause scratches with a knife and certainly not with keys. Even Gorilla Glass can handle such abuse because of Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Metal from the knife and keys is not hard enough to cause any real damage, if any scratches at all... I've seen light scratching on gorilla glass from sharp objects when I REALLY applied pressure but is it the glass that is scratching or the oleophobic nano coating? If anyone knows, I would LOVE to hear about it. To show the true durability against scratches with sapphire, sandpaper needs to be used. To elaborate a bit, sand and grit are what normally cause the scratches on our displays. It's everywhere! The mineral hardness of regular sandpaper is the same as or greater than gorilla glass, so it will scratch it. Sand/quartz rates at a 7 on Mohs scale. Sapphire is at a 9 on Mohs scale. Actual sand should NOT scratch sapphire; however, I bet you that a piece of silicon carbide sandpaper will scratch the hell out of it. ;) it's incredibly hard on Mohs scale! Also, I would like to see it dropped on gravel with the weight of a phone tacked onto it. While very resistant to damage, sapphire is brittle. A hard impact on gravel should still break it. I would love to get my hands on some of this and apply my torture tests! Wahahahahahha! My question now is if Sapphire is brittle, can it handle the bending seen here? Is Apple using some kind of a laminate to help with the durability?

  • Okay, this does look really good and the sapphire screen is amazing. BUT, people concentrate too much on the design. The ios software is good in some ways, but there are many faults. Such as the fact that you cannot put an sd card in an iPhone, so once you fill the memory that's it. (that's why they make different models with different storage space, to make more money for themselves) Also, the fact that you can't plug your iPhone into a computer without having a software that mostly only new model computers have. So what about the people who don't have that software? Do they just have to miss out? You also can't just download songs from online, you have to plug it in or buy it, another money making scam.

  • I gotta say, this is pretty huge for Apple. Synthetic sapphire is a serious material. If you want to see it in action, it is also the material of choice for grocery store barcode scanners because it is so hard and scratch resistant ... you will not scratch this stuff. I am also impressed with the hardness of current gen Gorilla Glass, but doubt it would stand up to years of being assaulted non-stop by canned goods. Sapphire, natural or synthetic, is essentially aluminium oxide (the same stuff used to produce aluminium) and the third hardest substance on earth. As mentioned below it is most often used in high-end watch crystals, but also has crazy applications like shatter-resistant windows for armored military vehicles and infra-red transparent nose cones for guided missiles! I'm curious how much these panels are costing Apple, synthetic sapphire is also a relatively expensive material. I hope we will also start seeing these panels on Android flagships soon!

    Brian GossBrian Goss7 سنوات قبل
    • @***** Didn't they rather recently manage to produce a material (carbon based) that is harder than diamond though?

      Jacob SamstaJacob Samsta7 سنوات قبل
    • If anyone has categorized sapphire (crystalline aluminium oxide) 4th in hardness, I am not aware of it. To my mind, classifying it as the 3rd "hardest substance on Earth" is even somewhat dubious, because silicon carbide (which is often cited in the 2nd position) is not found on Earth in any significant amount. Most of what is available to us in any meaningful quantity has "arrived here" in meteorites. Of course, hardness can be defined and measured a number of ways, but in talking about material choices for device screens we are principally concerned with resistance to scratching. This is measured using the Mohs Scale on which aluminium oxide is a 9, right behind diamond (10) in 2nd or 3rd place depending on who is publishing and whether or not they consider silicon carbide.

  • Honestly, scratches are all well and good, but I'd be more interested to see if this thing could survive a drop-test. A substantial one, I mean. No point having a screen that can be stabbed, but practically disintegrates if you drop it. Either way, impressive looking screen and clearly pretty durable.

  • Extremely clear, super high quality material....so what, gorilla glass isn't? How can one claim this is out of the ordinary without comparing it with a standard gorilla glass panes?

    spadaaccaspadaacca7 سنوات قبل
  • I really like your videos but im pretty disappointed that you didnt try scratching the screen with rocks, since the new great thing about sapphire glass is that the sapphire material is actually harder than stone. Even gorilla glass endures scratching with metal so its pretty lame to use a knife trying to scratch a display that, according the rumour can handle rocks

    mjarkismjarkis7 سنوات قبل
    • @***** yeah i like to collect rocks in my pocket :-D or maybe theres just some inevitable sand and dirt in the bottom of the pocket

  • That Sapphire Crystal display is pretty cool, almost as cool as the same exact display introduced A YEAR AGO on the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3. The display being flexible is irrelevant, the digitizer cannot flex like that. If you weren't a sell out, you would pick up a Galaxy Mega 6.3 and do a drop test with that... it is glass, it can still shatter.

    • @8Trails50 alright to all the low information people who have trouble with logic and don't actually read the comments, What motive does Apple have for making their own sapphire glass, when Gorilla glass already makes the glass in both 4.7 and 5.5 inch sizes? What motive does Samsung have for the same thing, keeping in mind no one made a panel in a 6.3" size? When the Mega was made, the Note 2 was the biggest phone with gorilla glass at 5.5". It's a piece of glass guys holy crap. Use your heads, the screen MKBHD has isn't even confirmed as being sapphire crystal, it could very be gorilla glass 3. Samsung had an actual reason to do it, and a need for it, so they made it for one specific device. Apple doesn't have a motive, because like Samsung at smaller sizes, Corning provides a very comparable panel at a lower cost. I'm willing to bet Apple will only make a 4.7" phone, and that it will use Gorilla glass... Just like all of their other phones. Let's see you guys try to fight logic, and fact, yet again. The comments are getting more more ridiculous.

  • I find this hilarious. I can't believe you actually believed that the 6 would have a sapphire display. The problem is that sapphire will shatter much easier than glass will. The dual ion X glass of the 6s is is just as scratch resistant and is more shatter resistant than the sapphire would've been. Just found it funny how far off this prediction was.

    Marquez JordiMarquez Jordi7 سنوات قبل
  • A lot of people don't understand hardness. It's apparent in this video, as the knife he scratches the sapphire with is made of VG-10 steel, which is much softer than sapphire; pretty much all metals will be softer than sapphire. Harder materials are more susceptible to physical breakage than softer materials, and the general consensus, from my experience, around damaged iPhones seems to be shattered or cracked screens, not scratched ones. The hype about Apple using sapphire more is simply a consumer misconception that their phones will be indestructible, when in reality, they'll be harder to scratch, but will be shatter with even more ease.

Oh, they present themselves in a way that says they are the leader, but that means shit when it's often not true. This cover is a response to the fact that iphones shatter, which unlike most other phones with plastic don't. And plastic has always been good enough. They could make replaceable plastic covers, but nooo, must be some exotic crystal otherwise no one has a reason. i7 desktops? yep, 2 years later than pc's and windows, giving out core2duo's, and at a time when performance was so sorely needed to render videos. SSD? late.. I could go on quite a ways...

  • So, "Sapphire Glass" is not just a marketing term. It's, like, actual sapphire! That's really awesome. It shouldn't scratch unless you have it in your pocket along with a bunch of diamonds. But if you have a bunch of diamonds in your pocket, you can probably afford to replace your phone frequently.

    RationalificRationalific7 سنوات قبل
    • @Savith Suraweera It is real sapphire. Sapphire isn't defined by where you find it. Sapphire made in the lab is exactly the same as naturally occurring sapphire.

      Hayden BeavisHayden Beavis7 سنوات قبل
    • Its not real sapphire, its synthetic sapphire. That said it still has many of the qualities of real sapphire and is not that expensive to manufacture

  • Okay, enough of the small stuff!! I wanna know what that Sapphire glass ranks on the hardness scale (Rockwell Hardness Scale RHS)!

    DichotomyDichotomy7 سنوات قبل
  • Doesn't matter how strong the glass is, it's always the flimsy LCD screen underneath that cracks.

  • I know this is a pre-release video, but didn't apple ultimately decide to go back to gorilla glass instead of sapphire crystal on the iP6 display screens?

  • Sapphire glass is used on fighter helicopters to be bullet proof and light. It may be thicker on the heli's, but hats off to Apple for the big upgrade.

    ABCABC7 سنوات قبل
    • And where did you get that information from? Because bulletproof glass does not use sapphire glass, and that's what most attack helicopter uses.

  • Wow the screen is really strong😱

    Michelle O'DellMichelle O'Dell7 سنوات قبل
  • Sapphire might be more scratch resistant but it wont protect your screen from breaking if you drop your phone. A screen protector will though, while protecting from scratches at the same time. Over hyped and over priced for what is does.

    xflynskywlkr27xflynskywlkr277 سنوات قبل
  • Only materials denser than than the glass (sapphire crystal in this case) can be scratched. Metal in the knife and keys is less dense compared to glass, therefore will never scratch the surface of the screen. Only dust particles (carrying tiny dense rock particles) will create the microscopic scratches you see on your phone.

    • @Greenboy28 Well, habits are reflected off of preference and experience, and it seems like you've worked with Windows (and Linux) in a professional and personal environment far more than Mac. Windows computers typically pay off in the end better... The odds are against Apple, of course. But, they not only have survived, but have thrived. You've gotta give them credit for that much!

    • @ReliableStupidity not really I did video production for businesses for a long time but now work in server administration which is done almost entirely in Linux.

  • At the part where he bends it with his foot at 3:29 you can see near his foot that it's broken because the green reflection of his shoe instantly changed at a crack line on the glass.

  • That is truly impressive. I just can't wait for iPhone 10 when all the electronics are hidden under the home button and camera bars, it's solar and kinetically powered, and the display is completely see through and clear, and the entire phone is that thin. That would be sweet.
