    • I guess one creative way of protesting this change could be if creators started publishing a google doc in the description of their video displaying a feedback that automatically updates from the creator's space (sense the irony ?). You'd effectively outsource the ratio, inside another part of google's server ! All you'd need for this protest to work would be enough creators doing it at the same time, and I'm sure this would instantly make headlines.

    • YT is being TOTALLY disingenuous. This is NOT to protect the "feelings" of Content Creators. This is purely to: 1) Benefit Corporations and Power Centers to make them "beyond reproach". What the Masses have to say, doesn't matter. The powerful literally do NOT care what the powerless have to say. Hence, the change is the antithesis of "Democracy". 2) Benefit certain political views and the Government official "Narrative". White House official channel on YT has already turned off the comments section. Wow. What Democratically elected Government anywhere in the world has intentionally STOPPED getting feedback from The Governed? When that happens, have we not moved away from Democracy and towards Totalitarianism and Fascism?🤔

  • Honestly, its poor decisions like this (by AR-too), that make me wish there was a competitor. I would be more than happy to move to another platform that would allow users the option to freedom of Speech, and allow your VOTE to be counted regardless if it a like or dislike.

    • @Danny Ong I agree... I'm going to get to the point that... I'm going to give everyone a "Dislike" with the comment of... due to the You Tube algorithm not showing the Dislike number... and maybe, just maybe, the Channel owners will start to complain to You Tube management to bring back the number system. After all... if they show the Like number, its useless unless you have something to compare it to like the "Dislike"... the sad thing is... its NOT the Channel owners fault, but they are going to get the brunt of it... its a shame.. and you're right, it is a monopoly

  • In every review form youtube has ever sent me over the past 5-6 years ive always said that dislikes should be more useful. being able to see at what point in the video the button gets hit would be a gamechanger and make it much more constructive! seeing if it's something you said/did, if people are immediately disliking etc. Not only does this change take away that valueable info from viewers, it doesnt do anything to help creators. we can still see it

    • @Tim Right because how to videos are commonly targeted by troll farms. Great logic. And use your brain? The issue is the waste of time, you often have to watch the entire video or most of it to determine if it's legit or not, that's was less convenient than being able to see the dislike video and determine whether the video was just clickbait or impractical.

  • I've often thought they need two rating systems. Quality of video / agree/disagree with content. Im often conflicted with appreciating the video and thought/effort/reasoning of it but disliking the point of view. Definitely agree with removing the removing being a bad thing and all about trying coddle content and protect content users and inso, their ad revenue. More content = more money right? It's essentially censoring the 'views' of people.

  • Agree 100%. Also, if AR-too's goal is to improve creator's mental health, I don't think removing dislikes even helps. It just means that instead of getting bombed with 6,000 dislikes, you'll get bombed with 6,000 comments saying "you suck" "ratio" "L" "use me as a dislike button". That's worse because each sign of disapproval will be unique in its approach, and harder to ignore.

    • Collective knowledge and contributions by any user community is extremely important. Every time I would play a AR-too video, I would glance at the Like vs Dislike ratio to make a quick informed decision as to the quality of the video. That has all changed now. Rather than immediately know if the user community finds a "how to" or product review video helpful, I now waste minutes watching the entire video. Marques is right. AR-too is a search engine, and the ability to see the Dislike count is extremely helpful in the search for signal vs noise. With this change, AR-too just dramatically damaged the user experience. AR-too should roll this back and poll their creators and users. I'm certain that most will say that AR-too should only hide the dislike count if the creator opts in to hiding dislikes. Make that an opt-in setting for creators to apply to their videos, and we're good.

Because now we'll watch all the unnecessary how-to (for example) videos until we reach the one that's useful - trial and error on our part, which the ratio actually helped us before. This would increase AR-too's ad revenue. Clever.

  • I'm "old enough" to remember when everyone didn't get a participation trophy to protect their feelings from mental stress........ The fact that almost all social media sites have the equivalent of a "participation trophy", where the only option is to "like" their content, is part of a greater problem. It's created a society of people who can't deal with constructive feedback (mostly because they're never provided with any). They cannot engage in conversations that don't 1,000% agree with or praise their every thought. I'm not a AR-too content creator. So I have no idea how visible AR-too analytics are without "extra" effort. But if the more readily available indication (to the public and creators) of how well particular videos are received is only the "like" button, then it still only amounts to a participation trophy. AR-too's argument is that the site was supposed "give everyone a voice". But by taking away the "dislike" button they're taking away the remaining public's ability to provide quantifiable public "voice" to the creators.

My issue for example is lets say big news companies tend to post a lot of things that are in their favor or in their bias and people have no way to voice themselves now as all those news companies disable comments so the dislike was the only way people could leave feedback.

  • I appreciate the thought process, but I think the problem is that we're trusting users to vote sensibly or that the majority of users are emotionally evenly balanced. The moment you consider that most users are snarky keyboard warriors who are easily motivated towards negative feedback then the ratio isn't useful anymore. I feel like that's a common case.

I would bring back the star rating and offer to write a short review explaining to the content creator what to improve or what they liked the most. This platform is becoming slowly like the other social media platforms with stupid emoji buttons, only positive feedback, censoring any negativity and toxicity away. AR-too like it or not, negativity and toxicity is in human nature. Don't try to suppress it. It will backfire on you sooner or later.

It sucks, but I guess forums and places similar like Reddit are the way to go instead now. Who knows? Maybe some brave soul will start cataloguing the good ones to recommend on other sites. Super sucks for small creators now, too, because I’m less likely to click on a video with less likes now.

  • This "dislike/thumbs down" being taken away has become so INFURIATING!!! With the expansive amounts of crap videos with no informational value to them being left available, & informational/helpful videos being taken down WTF are we here for? There's got to be a better platform available. No truthful videos allowed unless YT approves, you can't curse, can't disagree with people/organizations YT supports, you can't talk about the viral problem we're going through now, no conspiracies exposing the truth, don't talk about free energy, don't talk about the government, etcetera. SMH, 🤬irritating as hell.

  • For now, for the PC version of AR-too, I'm using some browser extentions which show the dislike count and even the ratio in percentage (I specifically use VidiQ) But for mobile app there is no solution This just kills the people's opinion, really And all we can so is to deal with it because AR-too is such a huge monopoly that there is no competition, so they can still do this

  • I can't tell you how many hours I've saved being able to click off tutorials after seeing a weak like-dislike ratio, and having to waste extra time to check the comments individually will significantly increase time wasted and cause more frustration. And again, any video will a boosted amount of dislikes will affect creators MUCH less than what they will see in the comments. I mean, can't creators hide like-dislike ratio's on their own videos manually? I feel as though this issue is a no-brainer.

  • Well said! I don't use twitter, I avoid TikTok like the plague! & Reeeally try to stay off of Facebook but like the Marketplace & Groups for info. I occasionally use Instagram for Entertainment & keeping up to date with new products/companies/generally cool stuff but fully expect/accept to 'waste time' looking at fun/pretty things... AR-too is definitely different! ... I try to avoid the click bait videos & even entertainment. My focus is on New ideas, Engineering/DIY & LEARNING!! The AR-too dislike count is essential for using my time efficiently & not getting fed up with wasting time listening to fake/false info etc! Also if the ratio isn't too bad it can instantly let you know whether the video is actually worth sitting through 'The bad bits' before getting to the promised/expected parts of the video. It's also just a great quick indication of how much effort you need to make reading through the comments for extra info etc! I actually love change but truly hope that AR-too see this as a mistake. It doesn't improve the platform & is just another form of control which nobody needs in these strange modern times! We need clarity; GOOD & BAD, so that we can make our OWN decisions on how to spend our time/money. It's simple really. Anyway that's my Rant over. :D - If your reading this Have a great day! Stay safe/positive, work hard for what you want & try to have some fun! haha

  • Also for certain videos it would leave larger possibilities for scams. Content creators and hide and delete certain comments on a video and not having an uneditable way for people to give their opinions I strongly think is more important than preventing "targeted disliking campaigns" when theres people whos personal information is at stake because of someone with a bunch of alt accounts to like their own scam vids.

  • Ultimately, AR-too is moving further and further away from the original creators' design and intent. We need more competition to give us options besides using just AR-too to find repair / programming / etc. videos and other self-help videos. Without that ratio, the like count is also meaningless to me. This change just makes AR-too less useful to me and makes it a waste of my time to have to sit through countless videos to find videos that offer content that I need to fix something, learn programming, etc. This choice wasn't made to protect small content makers -- it was a decision that had its roots in money and the bottom line. Unfortunately, I doubt AR-too will rescind their decision which means we as a community need to explore better alternatives and if there aren't any then we need to think about making new ones.
